Immediate Goal Shift: When and How to Pivot

Hello, Bold Goal Crushers! Welcome to another insightful edition of the Bold Goal Crusher podcast. I am your host, Sara Mayer. Today, we delve into an essential and impactful topic—goal adjustment. Specifically, we will discuss the signs that indicate you might need to pivot your goals and offer guidance on how to do so effectively without feeling like you are giving up.

Why Goal Adjustment is Necessary

Setting goals is crucial for personal and professional growth. However, as we progress, circumstances can change. We gain new insights, face unexpected obstacles, or discover new opportunities. Recognizing when it's time to adjust your goals is a sign of wisdom, adaptability, and resilience—not failure.

Signs It's Time to Adjust Your Goals

  1. Lack of Progress: If you've been working hard without making significant progress, it might be time to reassess your goal. Evaluate if the goal is realistic and if the approach is effective.
  2. Changing Priorities: Life is dynamic. If your goals no longer align with your current values, interests, or circumstances, reassess and adjust them to fit your new reality.
  3. Consistent Frustration: Goals should be challenge, but also be achievable and rewarding. If you're facing constant friction and stress, it may be a signal that something needs to change.
  4. New Opportunities: If a new opportunity aligns better with your long-term vision, consider pivoting your current goals to embrace it.
  5. Feedback from Others: Constructive feedback from mentors, peers, and trusted advisors can provide valuable insights. Consistent feedback suggesting a different path might warrant an adjustment.
  6. Loss of Passion: If you’ve lost passion for the goal, staying motivated becomes difficult. Reassessing and pivoting to something you are more passionate about can reignite your drive and energy.

How to Pivot Your Goals

  1. Reflect on Your Why: Revisit your original motivation for setting the goal. Understanding your core motivation can help decide if the goal is still relevant or if adjustments are needed.
  2. Evaluate Your Progress: Take an honest look at your achievements so far. Identify what’s working and what’s not to provide valuable insights for adjustments.
  3. Set New Milestones: Break down your adjusted goal into smaller, manageable milestones. This makes the process less overwhelming and allows you to celebrate progress along the way.
  4. Create an Action Plan: Develop a detailed plan outlining the steps needed to adjust your goal. Set deadlines and identify resources and support you may need.
  5. Stay Flexible: Remember, goals are not set in stone. Be open to further adjustments and avoid putting unrealistic deadlines on your goals.
  6. Maintain a Positive Mindset: Pivoting can feel like a setback, but focus on the benefits and maintain a positive outlook.

Personal Story: Adjusting My Goals

Let me share a personal story about a time when I had to adjust my goals. In 2007, I traveled to South Africa with the idea of helping women in other countries achieve education by building a school. For years, this goal sat in my notebook with no progress. I realized I couldn't do it alone and needed a pivot. Fast forward to 2024, when my friends and I, along with a nonprofit I founded, broke ground on a school in Guatemala. The pivot—understanding the necessity of collaboration—was the key to achieving this long-standing goal.

Practical Tips for Adjusting Your Goals

  1. Reframe Your Perspective: Change your view from seeing the pivot as a failure to a strategic step.
  2. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate achievements, no matter how small.
  3. Seek Support: Reach out to coaches, mentors, or consultants for guidance.
  4. Document Your Journey: Keep a journal or use a goal-oriented tool to reflect and track progress. Check out the Driven to Succeed journal available on my Amazon store.
  5. Focus on the Long-term Vision: Visualize achieving your goal and understand that the pivot may only change your route, not the destination.
  6. Be Kind to Yourself: Be gentle with yourself during the adjustment process. Each journey is unique, and it's okay to make changes along the way.

Conclusion

If you find yourself needing to adjust your goals, remember—it’s entirely natural and necessary as part of the goal-setting process. Recognize the signs that it’s time to pivot, make strategic adjustments, and stay on track. Being adaptable and resilient means you’re being smart about your goals—not giving up.
